Tanya Tier creates exquisite, unique lamps through a process of restoring and re- purposing rare antique and vintage curiosities, in particular old scientific equipment. The objects she uses have been discarded because they are obsolete or no longer functional, yet they still carry a wealth of history. She sees the process as a resurrection of the technological victims of industrial progress, and she creates each lamp as a heritage piece which stands as a tribute to the past workers and their craftsmanship. The end result is a captivating mixture of history, design, art and engineering. She hopes it will give these lovely old objects an extended life into the next century and beyond. Tanya Tier studied sculpture at Central Saint Martins. She has held solo shows in London and taken part in group shows in England, South Africa and Europe.
